Remastered Beatles CDs
The Beatles albums were originally released on CD in the 1980s and unlike many other bands and artists they've never had their albums remastered since then. Until now! On 09/09/09 ("number nine, number nine, number nine") the long wait is finally over.
In the '80s CD technology was new and the mastering job done for The Beatles albums at that time is now (and has been for quite some time) considered to be sub-par which is why people are so excited to hear these newly remastered versions of The Beatles classic albums.

But it's not just that the Beatles albums are being remastered for CD, it's also that the original mono mixes of the albums (up through 1968's The White Album) are being released on CD for the first time ever.
These mono versions are only available as a part of the mono box set which includes all 10 of The Beatles albums which were originally mixed in mono (this excludes Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, & Abbey Road which were only mixed in stereo in the first place.)

So what's the big deal with mono? Isn't that pretty outdated? Well yes, nobody mixes in mono anymore. But many people insist that the original mono mixes of albums such as Revolver and Sgt. Pepper sound better than their stereo counterparts.
It's important to remember that when these albums were recorded, mono was the standard and stereo was an afterthought. This means that The Beatles (and George Martin and the other producers & engineers like Geoff Emerick) spent the majority of their time working on the mono mixes. In contrast the stereo mixes were more of an experiment.
So by hearing these original mono mixes, we are hearing the originally intended sound of these albums. For the first time we get easy access to these mixes (rather than having to hunt down an old vinyl that may be extremely expensive... and we may not have a record player anyway!)
