1965 - Rubber Soul
Rubber Soul was The Beatles 6th album and it was a big step forward from their 5th album, Help! Songs such as "The Word," "Think For Yourself," and "Nowhere Man" showed that The Beatles could write lyrics about topics other than romantic love. But it wasn't only the lyrics that made a big step forward.
Musically Rubber Soul showcased a band that was clearly expanding their ideas of what rock n roll music could be, "Norwegian Wood" being probably the best example of that with it's groundbreaking use of the sitar (played by George Harrison.)
